Newbie Tips
A few suggestions for things you might want to do when starting out on
Turf. If you have anything to add, let us know.
-
On getting started, the first thing you should do is configure the
system to your preferred tastes. 'Help configuring' and 'help
config' should help you to do this. Your configuration determines
how brief or verbose the game is, whether the text is 'padded out'
with blank lines, whether you receive highlighting, and other game
preferences, as well as containing some technical bits about telnet
ga signals.
-
Ok, at this stage you might you want to read 'help novice', a small
help text tailored for the beginner. If you are an experienced Mud
player, you might want to give this a miss, although you have nothing
to lose by quickly casting your eye over the contents.
-
Now you should be ready to get started. The first useful command
to get to grips with is 'wimpy'. This command allows automatic fleeing
from combat, when your hit points fall below the number you specify.
This is always useful, especially if you are suffering lag.
-
On Turf interacting with the mobiles is central to the game. This
is usually done by speaking with, listening to, or bartering with them.
-
If you need food in the College area, look for Cath, she helps needy
people with food and beverage.
-
Objects are also important, especially later on when questing becomes
important, so get used to examining objects early on.
-
Use the commands 'consider' (on mobiles) and 'compare' (on objects) to
judge how powerful they are.

Turf Tips
-
Don't fight the tutor or the professor.
-
Eat and drink regularly - being hungry or thirsty affects the rate
at which you recover after combat.
-
Eat the bits you hack off your enemies.
-
Try to get as much armour as you can.
-
Read 'help abbreviation' and get familiar with the abbreviations
you can use.
-
Spellcasters should read 'help cast'.
-
Most important : If you have a question, try the help text. Turf
prides itself on the completeness of its help text, and hopes it is
intuitive to use. If you ever think anything is missing from the
help texts, please alert an immortal.
